SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
Age 65 or older;
Blind; or
Disabled.
If you are applying for SSI, you can complete a large part of your application by visiting our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You also can call us toll-free at 888-245-5368 to ask for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
Parents or guardians usually can apply for blind or disabled children under age 18. In some cases, other third parties can apply for children.
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed.
Please bring:
- Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
- Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
- Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
- Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status; and
- Your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number. If you are approved for SSI, you must receive your

I had received a letter in the mail for a regular review for my son's social security case it gave me till March 26th 2021 to call the case worker back to answer questions. I have been calling the case worker twice A-day for the last 2 weeks and have left probably over 15 voicemails. It is now past the 26th so today I called the main altoona number like the caseworkers voicemail had said to do. I hit 0 for an agent and the lady that answered only let me get out 'I got a letter' Before literally SCREAMING at me to follow the instructions on the letter and call my case worker. I then was only able to say 'I can't' when she hung up on me. I have tried to call 6 more times in a row and now I just get operators are busy call again later. Absolutely disrespectful and so unprofessional you do not act like that. If you do not like your job then don't work in that field find a job that gives you purpose or makes you smile because that was simply outrageous and uncalled for.
I receive widow benefits. I have also worked for 40 years. Next month I will be full retirement age. Will I automatically be switched to the higher benefit? Believing that my working benefit will be higher than my widow benefit, I would hope to leave my SS alone until I turn 70. Is that possible?
I've been on social security for about 20 years. My wife is also on sis. She's my payee and I have direct express card but her name is on it.
