SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
Age 65 or older;
Blind; or
Disabled.
If you are applying for SSI, you can complete a large part of your application by visiting our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You also can call us toll-free at 866-931-7674 to ask for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
Parents or guardians usually can apply for blind or disabled children under age 18. In some cases, other third parties can apply for children.
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed.
Please bring:
- Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
- Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
- Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
- Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status; and
- Your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number. If you are approved for SSI, you must receive your

I am BEYOND frustrated. I tried logging into my SS account but it won't accept my password. I'm told I will be emailed a temporary one to log in and change my password but it doesn't happen. I've called the 800 number four times now and after being on hold at least 15 minutes, I get hung up on. Calls to the local office require a specific 5-digit extension, but how are you to know who you want to talk to? This website says call after 6:00 but the office closes at 4:00 so you CAN'T leave a message, talk to a real person, or make an appointment.
I need to update my direct deposit information but no luck doing it on line.

I can't get online to change my information. My Email was changed after being hacked a couple years ago. The site will not let me change it. I have a court order name change. Can I make an appointment to come to the office???? I've tried online services at least 10 times. Can I just drop paperwork at the SS Office????
Why don't you have an email address on your web site to send messages to???? Why can't someone leave a voice mail on your automated phone system unless you have an extension number??? Useless!!!! I have a problem with my checking account number for direct deposit and need it changed.

I just sat on the phone on hold for 18 minutes and then I was told they would try and transfer me to someone. It then rang at least 10 or 15 times and I got a voice that said everyone was busy and I would have to try back. This is ridiculous! It should not be that hard to get hold of your office. I am wanting to make an appointment to ask questions about retirement. I know you would rather me find answers on the website, but they don't have all the answers I am looking for. Poor customer service!
