SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
Age 65 or older;
Blind; or
Disabled.
If you are applying for SSI, you can complete a large part of your application by visiting our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You also can call us toll-free at (866) 398-1456 to ask for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
Parents or guardians usually can apply for blind or disabled children under age 18. In some cases, other third parties can apply for children.
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed.
Please bring:
- Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
- Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
- Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
- Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status; and
- Your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number. If you are approved for SSI, you must receive your

After waiting on hold for 25 minutes a representative picked up the phone and 'just hung on me'. Rather then call back and wait an additional 25 minutes I decided to call another SS office in hopes that they have a little more respect my time.

I been calling for 5 months
Trying to apply for my social security card but the office has been closed since the coronavirus hit.
I applied for my replacement card and never received it I also included my insurance card with the application. Not receiving my SS card has caused me a serious hardship. I can't move or get my license without it.
I received a termination of benefits letter and need to appeal within 5 days. There are 2 phone numbers on the letter to call with specific questions (one is a federal office number and one for my local office in Chester) between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. First, when I called the federal number, I received an automated, 'We're sorry, this is not a working number.' Then when I called the Chester number after 7 a.m., the message said that the office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. When I called after 9, my call was terminated because there were only 3 options: '1. to dial the 5 digit extension, press... 2. to search by name, press... 3. For hours and directions, press... or 4. to hear these options again, press...' And, there's no option to make an appointment! This is frustrating when I have a 5 day turn around time! But all the instructions to make an appointment direct me to call the number to make an appointment and strongly advise people to not show up without an appointment!
