SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
Age 65 or older;
Blind; or
Disabled.
If you are applying for SSI, you can complete a large part of your application by visiting our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You also can call us toll-free at (866) 227-1616 to ask for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
Parents or guardians usually can apply for blind or disabled children under age 18. In some cases, other third parties can apply for children.
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed.
Please bring:
- Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
- Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
- Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
- Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status; and
- Your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number. If you are approved for SSI, you must receive your

I received my updated SS card with my new last name from the Cleburne, TX SS office. They did not notify the IRS of this change so it has caused a multitude of problems with my financial institutions, etc. I have tried for months to call this local SS office but the calls drop when dialing the toll-free # after approx 10-20 minutes of being on hold through the automated phone system. The local # just rings and rings, nobody is at this office to walk into and deal with. IRS will not help. They tell me I need to contact the SS office because they are supposed to notify IRS of this change. Is this not ridiculous? I don't know WHAT to do.

Today 08/08/20 I tried returning a missed call at the Cleburne office this morning. She didn’t leave an extension and when you go through the pre recorded messages and press 0 to speak to someone the phone system hangs up on you/me on the 3rd ring. I’ve tried calling the 866-227-1617 number 12 times.
i have tried numerous times today to call in and multiple times the line will just hang up on me and several times someone answers but then the phone hangs up. i don't know how to get through. Can someone reach out to me?
