SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
Age 65 or older;
Blind; or
Disabled.
If you are applying for SSI, you can complete a large part of your application by visiting our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You also can call us toll-free at 888-487-0150 to ask for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
Parents or guardians usually can apply for blind or disabled children under age 18. In some cases, other third parties can apply for children.
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed.
Please bring:
- Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
- Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
- Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
- Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status; and
- Your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number. If you are approved for SSI, you must receive your

Opening Up a MySocialSecurity Account

Monthly cash benefits are paid to the eligible individual with a disability and his or her eligible dependents throughout the period of disability.
SSI
SSI benefits also are payable to people 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial limits. People who have worked long enough may also be able to receive Social Security disability or retirement benefits as well as SSI.

I just called my local social security office. They answered almost immediately and were very kind and helpful, the lady answered my questions and I was off the phone in less than 5-6 minutes.
I have been trying to make an appointment. I have important papers to get to social security and there is never anyone available to answer calls and says the office is closed to anyone without an appointment. So how do I get an appointment
Twice I got a busy signal, then called again after waiting 10 minutes on hold and got hung up on. I am very stressed out I have some urgent questions, and really need some answers. I tried reaching out online, and end up at a list of attorneys. Can I get help from someone who is nice? Its been kind of rough last few months and this experience isn't helping.
Today I spoke to Sonja about a situation that was very concerning to me. She was helpful, knowledgeable, and cheerful! She let me know what I had to do and it was simple. The time on the phone was only 12 minutes and that included the wait time for a customer service rep. Great job!
I'm wanting to sign up for social security and all I am getting is a recording
I have dealt with three representatives of the Kalispell office in the past 5 months. I have found them to be responsive but often difficult to work with due to misleading information provided by them. This necessitated numerous follow up phone calls and my hiring an outside expert on social security benefits to get the facts clarified. After nearly 5 months I learned that some of the members of this office did not record my phone calls and consequently they refused to act on my request for retroactive suspension of payments because they claim I did not contact them earlier. I am now having to resort to retrieving phone record files from my telephone provider to prove I did make such calls. More to come on this as I will write the local office as soon as I have all of the information, and copy the regional office. It would be nice if the employees would simply be helpful and not have an attitude that they 'know it all' and that individuals such as myself are nothing but ignorant citizens
