SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
Age 65 or older;
Blind; or
Disabled.
If you are applying for SSI, you can complete a large part of your application by visiting our website at www.socialsecurity.gov. You also can call us toll-free at 866-270-8629 to ask for an appointment with a Social Security representative.
Parents or guardians usually can apply for blind or disabled children under age 18. In some cases, other third parties can apply for children.
You should bring certain items when you apply. Even if you do not have all of the things listed below, apply anyway. The people in the Social Security office can help you get whatever is needed.
Please bring:
- Your Social Security card or a record of your Social Security number;
- Your birth certificate or other proof of your age;
- Information about the home where you live, such as your mortgage or your lease and landlord's name;
- Payroll slips, bank books, insurance policies, burial fund records and other information about your income and the things you own;
- The names, addresses and telephone numbers of doctors, hospitals and clinics that you have been to, if you are applying for SSI because you are disabled or blind;
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status; and
- Your checkbook or other papers that show your bank, credit union or savings and loan account number. If you are approved for SSI, you must receive your

Opening Up a MySocialSecurity Account

SSI

I just called to have my direct deposits changed and twice during the call the agent yelled at me as if I was a two -year- old. This is unacceptable. I may be old but I have manners and I am not stupid. The young lady who took the call should be reprimanded for her rude behavior and sent to a customer service training class. One time I tolerated it but the second time I told her to stop yelling and she hung up on me. I now to call back and make sure she did not mess up my direct deposits
The people at the SSI Office in Racine are Amazing! So Compassionate and So Helpful. The only problem I have is not knowing exactly where to send my files to them. Also, I was to have a phone review but they never called me.
i was wondering if i could get a copy of my awards letter the new set one if i cant pick it up at the location is there a way of faxing it to a company as i applied for a loan and need it desperately please let me know how we can take care of this.

I was writing because I am a Single Father raising my children (African American) and today My son & I came to the Racine Branch around 10:30 A.M. Social Security office to obtain a new of SSC because he is currently trying to obtain a new job. They are asking for Social Security Paperwork as he is under 18. Which before arriving I went online and acquired which documents to bring ie: birth certificate, Identification, medical records etc. Which I had all of above and was still turned away. I'm kind of confused because the lady was not very helpful at all and we are still stuck at square 1, and now my son will not be able to start work. Which I think as an working man myself in the real estate field. I want instill the importance of hard work and earning everything into my son. Please if someone could follow up with me about this matter it will be gladly appreciated.
